The intriguing mélange of the dandyish look and an extrovert personality mixed with a little bit of mystery and that perfect dose of adrenaline a real man should own in his DNA, makes form Romano Ricci the most seductive perfumer I’ve ever met. And even if he has the “blue blood” of the Ricci Fragrance Empire, the young Romano created his own, unique, niche brand – Juliette Has a Gun – which conquered not only the most sophisticated women, but also the French Fragrance Foundation that has honored him with the “Special Prize of the Board” at “Les Parfums 2011” (FiFi Awards).
Everybody wants to know who is Romano Ricci the perfumer, but I would like to know who is Romano the man. Can you tell me a little about you, your lifestyle, your interests, your beliefs?
I’m a Taurus. When I do something I go passionately and full throttle. I was surrounded by women all my life and have developed a real admiration for the gender. I love perfumery since always but most of what I see I find it a little bit boring. I was born in a famous family but what I do today is only personal. Nothing to do with an honor to my ancestors or other things I’ve read and never said. I hate when an article starts with Romano Ricci, great grandson of Nina Ricci… even if I also know that it is what people are interested in.
You must be used with the following question, though, since this accessory is somehow one of your trademarks… what’s the story with the hat? Tell me more about your collection of hats, please.
You will think that I have an obsessive-compulsive disorder but my collection of hats is made of only one model, replicated. I have around 50 of them, all coming from the same brand: Motsch. I’ve tried others but it is the only one I really feel comfortable with. I would also love to have other colors but they don’t do any. At my greatest despair!!
As an adrenaline addicted, which was the most dangerous decision you made in your life?
It is always a risk to create a brand out of nothing, especially one called Juliette Has a Gun, but it was not my most dangerous move because it was always meant to be like that. I would never enter the perfumery just by saying “Hi, my name is Romano Ricci; I am the great grandson…bla bla bla”. I wanted to bring something to the industry, to shake it a little bit!
How do your personality traits reflect in your products? Where can I find most of Mr. Romano in the Juliette’s scents?
Being the perfumer behind the brand, the fragrances are inevitably the reflection of my personality or my mood. The extremism, the weakness for strong character, the colors, the attention to quality, the honesty, all these are very coherent with who I am.
What was the main purpose when you decided to create Juliette Has a Gun?
To bring a 28 years old creator’s vision on perfumery and femininity!
Lady Vengeance was my first niche perfume and my favorite ever. Now it has a competitor in Gentlewoman. What’s the story of this new creation?
Well, that is interesting to like these two fragrances as they are quite different one from another. With Gentlewoman, my idea was to propose a masculine fragrance dedicated to woman. So I have done this fragrance with a Cologne’s base meaning Bergamot, Neroli but twisted with Almond essence, which gives a discreet perfume but sufficiently dressed up to be worn with elegance. While Lady Vengeance is more sophisticated, maybe more striking too. But then, who am I to judge that kind of things?? In any case, I thank you very much for this great honor!
When, where and in which dress code can a woman wear Gentlewoman?
Some people say that it is a summer fragrance, but I think that there is no season for it. I think it is an adaptable fragrance. But the best place to wear it… where you want to be kissed! The Gentlewoman allows herself to wear some man clothes because she doesn’t need to do much to express her feminine side. But that’s only my vision, of course.
Which one is the scent you like to play with most and why?
Not a Perfume I would say, because some people can smell it, some others can’t, also because you can mix it, so it is always a different and therefore very playful!
Why did you choose to create perfumes only for women? Why not a brand for men, too?
The same reason I have chosen the name, women are much more inspiring.
What’s the new temptation in your life?
Mmmmm, a Mickey Mouse Rolex!
